Clothing Made With Care, Made Fair | Meet Our Tailors
The majority of our clothing is made in Pushkar, Rajasthan, under the watch of our fantastic master tailor, Ganshyam. He really knows his stuff, a wonderfully talented garment maker with a great eye for design.
This business is one of the larger ones we work with, and it’s quite a big player in the small market town of Pushkar, employing around 150 people. When you step into the building, you are met with a sense of professionalism and a very positive, friendly atmosphere. Bright, light and airy, the working conditions are pleasant and set an excellent example for how clothing manufacturing can be done right.
Unlike many businesses in India, where workers will bend over backwards, grinding late into the evening to get your work done, this business sets boundaries and keeps regular working hours.
What might seem like a standard to many Forage customers is, unfortunately, still a luxury for many garment workers around the world. That’s what drives our decisions of who we work with. We try to uplift the communities we work with, empowering them with fair pricing and never collaborating with businesses that employ poor working conditions.
The working day for Gangshyam’s team is 10am to 5pm, at which point the whole place closes up and shuts down and everyone goes home. There are regular chai breaks and one hour lunch break each day, where all production stops and everyone can be found outside sitting on the floor joking, drinking chai and eating lunch together. It demonstrates to us that it is a very decent place to work.
Unlike many of the businesses in Pushkar, we have to be careful not to arrive late in the day to start working on our order. Here, the workers come before the customers, and rightly so. No matter how close we are to completion, if we are not done by 5pm, we are coming back to finish off tomorrow!
We are proud to work closely with businesses that show respect for their employees. It’s how we would expect ourselves, our families and friends to be treated and it’s how we expect our collaborators to be treated too.
