Bury your nose in the wool and you can still detect traces of the charcoal fires and delicious spices from the beautiful mountain homes in which these hats were made.
These Hats are all Finger-Knitted as part of 'The Forage Finger Knitting Project' which we set up in Northern India
These hats are totally unique - they have all been made with love and laughter and it really shows
Each beautiful, colourful piece comes with a tag attached with the name of the woman who finger-knitted it and a full colour leaflet with information on the project and photographs of the women we worked with this year - so you can see exactly who made your hat!
We have decided to name our hats in this collection after the women in our finger-knitting team.
We set the project up in 2008, with the aim to encourage confidence and personal empowerment through financial independence for unemployed women in rural communities in Northern India.
The concept is simple; armed with bags of wool, we organise free, finger-knitting workshops in poorer communities, where local women are invited to come and learn how to make our hats. At the end of each session, they get paid for each hat they have made.
Finger-knitting is a technique of knots and loops, similar to crocheting but using no needles or tools, and the beautiful hand-spun wool we use is sourced from a small village shop in the Himalayas.
Whilst having fun and learning a new skill which they can use in the future, these women also have the chance to bring some much needed money into the household.
By producing our hats in this way we were able to create a truly transparent, grass routes production line, which we are extremely proud of.
